Discover Sâncraiu (Kalotaszentkirály)

Sâncraiu ( Kalotaszentkirály in Hungarian), one of the most beautiful villages in the Kalotaszeg region, is situated on the banks of the small river Călata, at a distance of about 6 km from Huedin, being the northern gate of entry in the Apuseni Mountains. The landscape is dominated by the Vlădeasa top (1836 m).

The locality was first mentioned in official documents in 1288,  the reformed church was built in the 13^th century. The village is also famous because of its very skilled craftsmen: carpenters, blacksmiths, furriers and bricklayers.

This is a place where traditions were not forgotten: Chistmas Nativity and chanting, the New Year’s greeting, the Easter watering as well as the Festival of Grapes.

The International Folk Dance Camp Festival gathers young people all around the world, who are eager to learn the music and the dances from Kalotaszeg. Its also 1991, when the rural tourism activity began, now 40 rural pensions and guesthouses, with a total capacity of 250, are expecting tourists.

Today, Sâncraiu has a population of 1000, of which about 90% are Hungarians and 10% are Romanian.

Our traditional costumes are characterized by the richness of colors, on the other hand by simplicity and purity. These peculiar costumes  has become the symbol of the local, contributing to the embellishment of religious holidays.
